Civil Warfare General Sherman once said, " War is hell. ” He was right. In the short account " The Things They Transported, ” Tim O'Brien reveals us the hell that our troops suffered. The narrator displays us a captivating, and up-close story about each of our soldiers in the Vietnam Battle. While the title relates to the storyline about things carried, but the soldiers take more than just the physical burdens-in many cases, they are weighed down by mental baggage. The emotional suitcases that is heavy in their hearts outweighs the physical weight. Besides the items that they need to carry, additionally, they carry personal mementos. Showing how much the soldiers are carrying the narrator tells us " points carried had been largely dependant upon necessity. ” Some of the requirements included, " P-38 can easily opener, pocket or purse knives…candy, cigarettes…C rations and two or three canteen of normal water. Together, these materials weighed among fifteen and twenty pounds…” The narrator goes on to give to us even more depth about the points the military carried; " …. transported the standard M-16 gas-operated strike rifle. The narrator tells us that the intangible items that these men carried proven heavier than any backpack and gun. The main character in the tale is Lieutenant Cross, platoon leader. He is in love with a girl in the us. She is constantly on his mind and because this individual allows his thoughts to consider him apart and be with her. Because of this, he blames himself for the loss of life of another platoon member even though there was clearly nothing he could have done to protect him. " Lieutenant Cross experienced the pain.
